Steve reich 2x5 remix

Posted by the parlour bard , Monday, 15 November 2010 12:58

I've been an admirer of steve reich's work for a long time so
when his record label invited people to remix his latest piece
I jumped at the chance. I've set the music to some clips of
a great film, koyaanisquatsi, which can be bought here.

The song of seikilos

Posted by the parlour bard , Monday, 8 November 2010 12:45

This is the oldest known complete song with words and music, from around 2000
years ago. It was inscribed on a greek grave marker by seikilos to commemorate
his wife, Euterpe. these are the lyrics, music performed by the parlour bards.

As long as you live, be joyful
let nothing grieve you unduly
for life is short
and time takes its toll

Irish lullaby

Posted by the parlour bard , Saturday, 30 October 2010 05:19

Recently someone asked me to restore a damaged 78 rpm recording that their
grandfather, Martin Fitzgerald, made in 1948. Martin was an award winning
singer and was about 13 years old at the time. A new studio had been built
in Cork city and this piece was the first recording to be made there, It
has some historical significance and copies have been sent to the national
music archive in Dublin. The pictures in the slideshow are all from gods own
country, Penwith.

nonsuch

Posted by the parlour bard , Monday, 23 August 2010 11:45

here's an old english country dance I've just finished called nonsuch,
possibly named after henry VIII's grandest palace, so called because
there was none such like it in all the land.

Bristlecone pines

The oldest living things, some have been dated to more than 4000 years old, as old as the pyramids. our perception of time changes as we age,it seems to accelerate, the years go by quicker and quicker. if these trees have any awareness, summer and winter must be passing them by like day and night to us.

pushing too hard

Posted by the parlour bard , Thursday, 20 May 2010 12:07

Around this time last year the king of pop passed away, a man who despite personal problems had a profound influence on popular music. I'm referring of course to sky saxon, lead singer and creative force behind the seeds, purveyors of primitive garage rock. In the late sixties, an era when musicianship was important, they were the barbarians at the gates, three chord morons just kicking out the jams, here is their masterpiece, pushing too hard, it's gassy.
